01Check that service exists before you plan on it
Our listings document gluten-free menu information. They are not a record of current takeout hours, delivery zones or third-party platform availability, which change often. Before you count on an order, confirm the service directly on the restaurant’s own site or by phone.
Delivery platforms can show menus that lag behind the restaurant. We treat platform menus as research leads, never as current evidence.
02Phone first when it matters
Calling lets you say "celiac disease" to a person and ask the method questions. App instructions are often printed on a ticket and read quickly during a rush. If you must order through an app, a short, specific note is more useful than a long one, and a follow-up call to confirm is better still.
03Timing in Ottawa
Friday and Saturday between 6:00 and 7:30 is peak time for most kitchens. Ordering earlier gives staff more attention for a careful order. In winter, delivery times stretch, so plan for food sitting longer in a bag with other orders.
04When it arrives
Check that the gluten-free item is labelled or packed separately, and that sauces are the ones you asked about. If anything looks substituted, it is reasonable not to eat it and call the restaurant. Fried items and anything with a breaded cousin on the menu deserve the closest look.
Questions worth asking
Say these in your own words. The point is a specific answer about today, not a reassuring one.
- Do you offer takeout tonight, and is this gluten-free item available for pickup?
- I have celiac disease. Can the kitchen confirm how this item is prepared for takeout?
- Is the fried item cooked in a dedicated fryer?
- Can the gluten-free item be packed and labelled separately?
- Are sauces packed on the side, and do they contain gluten?
Sourced listings
We intentionally list no venues here. Service options change faster than menus; check each restaurant directly.
Frequently asked
Do all restaurants in your directory deliver?
No, and we do not claim they do. Confirm takeout and delivery directly with each restaurant.
Are delivery-app gluten-free categories reliable?
We treat them as research leads only. Platform menus may be out of date and rarely describe preparation.
Can I filter the directory for takeout?
The directory has a dining-option filter, but it only reflects options recorded in a listing. Always confirm current service with the restaurant.
Sources and research leads
General guidance and community lists inform the questions above. None of them is evidence of a specific restaurant’s current menu, and citing them implies no endorsement.
- Canadian Celiac Association · Dining out
General guidance on disclosing celiac disease and asking about fryers, toasting, pasta water and surfaces. Not evidence about any Ottawa restaurant.
- Celiac Ottawa · Member-suggested restaurants
A community research lead. The chapter states the list carries no guarantee of gluten-free status or cross-contact avoidance. Not an endorsement.
